My chosen lavender varieties

In this article, I'd like to share the varieties I've chosen, and I'll also include links to where you can buy seeds.

In 2017, I chose 4 different varieties for my garden in order to investigate which ones could grow in Latvian conditions.

And the varieties I have chosen are the following - Lavandula angustifolia - 'Provance blue', 'True Lavender', 'Munsted Dwarf', 'Hidcote blue'. I bought the seeds from groseeds.uk

1.2 att. 'PROVENCE BLUE'

It is recommended to plant in small pots or boxes. Can be placed in a cool or tall greenhouse for up to 2 weeks, the seeds need cold to germinate after a change in temperature. But if the spring is warm, the seeds can be put in the refrigerator for 7-10 days, then sown in containers and moved to a warmer place so that the sun shines on them. Then transplant into 7.5 cm high pots. Installation 7-10 days before exhibition.

1.3. att. 'True Lavender'

It is recommended to plant in small pots or boxes. Plant in well-prepared peat compost, so that it has good water permeability, so it is necessary to add prelite, sand or gravel to the soil. When the seeds have been sown, the container can be covered with a polyethylene bag and left at a temperature of 15-180C for two weeks. Put it in the fridge for 3-6 weeks. Then the plants are put back at a temperature of 15-180C. If the seeds do not germinate after 6-10 weeks, repeat the procedure. Until there are visible signs that the seeds are germinating, place them in a warm place. Then repot when the plant is big enough to be repotted in 7.5 cm high pots. Installation 7-10 days before exhibition.

My experience!

'True Lavender' 0.4 g seeds in a package, 500 seeds inside.

Only one seed sprouted

Plant length 11 cm after a few months.

I did not choose this seed last year.

But I can't say 100% that the seed is bad because it's just my experience and the quality of the seed is very important. Maybe the seeds collected in another year are of much better quality!

My experience!

1st year. Lavender 'Provence Blue' says 100 seeds per pack. After counting, there are 102 seeds in the package.

23 seeds sprouted from them.

Height after a couple of months - the longest 40 cm and this plant had a flower!

2nd year seeds 'Provence Blue' - 32 out of 101 seeds germinated. Therefore, the germination rate is 31%

But I recommend buying seeds from groseeds. uk , because germination was much better the following year. And this unit has a super delivery, they attach a thank you letter to each seed packet and plus with each seed packet sold they donate money to Malawi. So that these Africans can drink clean and safe water!

Then transplant into 7.5 cm high pots. Installation 7-10 days before exhibition.

My experience!

in the 1st year. 'Munstead Dwarf', 600 seed package, 602 seeds per package.

Out of 602 seeds, 104 germinated and 10 were dead.

Plant length - longest 15 cm, average length 10 cm after a few months.

in the 2nd year.

'Munsted Dwarf' - 32 of 131 seeds germinated. Therefore, the germination rate is 24%

But I can't say 100% that the seed is bad because it's just my experience and the quality of the seed is very important. Maybe the seeds collected in another year are of much better quality!

My experience!

'Hidcote Blue'- 40 of 103 seeds germinated. Therefore, the yield is 38%

This is just my experience and the quality of the seed is very important. Maybe the seeds collected in another year are of much better quality! I would also like to mention that it is much more difficult to obtain from seeds than from cuttings.
